Traditionally the English education system is split into two halves, Primary and Secondary education. Primary Schools educate children between the ages of 4-11 years, at which point they continue on to their Secondary School. At the age of 16, students take their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations, having chosen between 8 to 11 different subjects, including English, Maths and Science. These are graded on a number system, 9 being the highest and 1 the lowest.
Students then progress into the Sixth Form, where they study for either 3 or 4 GCE A-levels or for the International Baccalaureate (IB). Both of these programmes involve two years of study and final examinations are usually sat when students are approaching their 18th birthdays, at the end of the two years of study.
The University of London International Foundation Programme is a one-year study programme which represents an alternative to the more traditional two-year A-level or IB examinations. Students can enrol aged 16 but must turn 17 years of age by the Christmas break and examinations are sat in April of their year of study.
Bristol International College offers the Business Management curriculum for the IFP in which students choose four courses from the following seven options:
- Mathematics & Statistics
- Pure Mathematics
- Business & Management
- Economics
- Accounting & Finance
- International Relations
- Law
The IFP curriculum offered by BIC encourages active learning by engaging with contemporary issues. Students’ learning experience is strongly focused on the development of academic skills alongside analysis and debate of real-world issues.
All IFP examinations are conducted by the University of London and on successful completion of the International Foundation Certificate, students can apply for a number of degree courses offered at University of London member institutions (incl. LSE, King’s, CASS Business School, Goldsmiths, Royal Holloway, Queen Mary, SOAS etc) and to a wide range of other top universities in the UK and worldwide.
